Yamaha began when a man who mended watches fixed a school’s broken organ.
In 1887 a school in Hamamatsu asked Torakusu Yamaha, who repaired medical equipment and watches, to look at its reed organ. He found two broken springs, and within two months he had built an organ of his own. Tokyo’s music experts called it unusable, so he stayed a month to study music theory and built a second, fit to replace imported organs.
