Y Combinator began as a summer experiment its founder called part expense, part charity.
It started in 2005 as the Summer Founders Program, a Cambridge experiment Paul Graham called part educational expense, part charitable donation. The first class was eight startups, Reddit among them, each founder getting $6,000. The companies Y Combinator has backed since are now worth a combined $1.3 trillion.
