The 914 copier arrived in 1959 and the name became the word for the act. Aspirin, escalator and linoleum had already lost their trademarks by becoming ordinary nouns. So Xerox ran ads asking people to say “photocopy” and warning that you could not xerox a xerox on a xerox.
