Pfizer scientists were testing sildenafil as a treatment for high blood pressure and chest pain. It was not working particularly well for hearts. But male volunteers in its trials in Wales kept reporting the same side effect and grew reluctant to hand their leftover pills back. In 1998 Pfizer sold the side effect as Viagra.
