Vegemite once flopped so badly its maker tried renaming it with a pun.
Imported Marmite owned Australia’s breakfast table, and the new paste sat unsold. In 1928 Fred Walker renamed it Parwill, for the slogan “If Marmite… then Parwill”, a pun on “if Ma might, Pa will”. Parwill was sold only in Queensland, where shoppers ignored it too, and the jar went back to being Vegemite.
