Uniqlo is a typo that became a brand.
Tadashi Yanai opened “Unique Clothing Warehouse” in Hiroshima, Japan in 1984, and the name was shortened to Uni-Clo. When the company registered in Hong Kong in 1988, a clerk reportedly misread the C as a Q, and Yanai liked the sound of it enough to keep it.
