Twinkies started with an entirely different cream filling than the vanilla they carry today.
Jimmy Dewar invented the Twinkie in 1930 to use shortcake pans that sat idle outside strawberry season, piping banana cream into little sponge cakes. World War II banana rationing forced a switch to vanilla cream — which proved popular enough that the snack simply never switched back.
