Tupperware buried 600 copies of its star saleswoman’s book in a pit.
Earl Tupper’s burping bowls sat unsold in stores until Brownie Wise sold the bowls at living-room parties. In 1951 Tupper took Tupperware off the shelves and made her vice president, and in 1954 she was the first woman on BusinessWeek’s cover. In 1958 he fired her, and she won a year’s pay only by suing. Months later he sold the company for $16 million.
