In 1985 Tommy Hilfiger, a designer nobody had heard of, launched his label on a Times Square billboard that showed no clothes. It was a game of hangman, the initials of Ralph Lauren, Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein, then his own. Two years later 68 percent of New Yorkers surveyed named him among the top four or five designers.
