Akihiro Yokoi conceived the toy and Aki Maita developed it for Bandai in 1996, a pixel creature that needed feeding, play and attention, and died on screen if ignored too long. Schools confiscated the toys. When the craze faded in 1998, Bandai, which had wildly overproduced, scrapped some 2.5 million unsold units.
