Sonic began as a drive-in called Top Hat.
Troy Smith opened the Top Hat Drive-In in Shawnee, Oklahoma, in 1953. Trying to franchise it, he found “Top Hat” was already trademarked. The drive-in used the slogan “Service with the Speed of Sound,” so in 1959 he renamed it Sonic.
