Shazam worked through a phone call before smartphones existed.
It launched in the UK in 2002 as a dial-up service. You called 2580, held the phone to the speakers, and 30 seconds later a text message named the song. Apple built it into Siri’s song recognition in 2014, then bought the company outright in 2018 for about $400 million.
