Shake Shack began as a hot dog cart.
In 2001, restaurateur Danny Meyer set up a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park to support a public art installation. The cart did so well it became permanent, then a building, then a chain. By the close of its first day of trading in 2015, the hot dog stand was worth about $1.6 billion.
