Scotch Tape was named by an irritated auto painter.
In 1923, 3M lab technician Richard Drew saw painters struggling to keep paint from bleeding under their masking tape. Working on a better one, he made a tape with adhesive only along the edges. A painter testing it snapped, “Take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!” The name stuck.
