Samsonite is named after Samson, the strongman of the Bible.
Jesse Shwayder, who founded the Denver trunk maker in 1910 with $3,500 of savings, called his cases Samson to sell them on strength. To prove it, five Shwayder men, together more than 1,000 pounds, stood on a plank laid across one suitcase for a photograph captioned “Strong enough to stand on.”
