Rolex is a made-up word that means nothing.
Hans Wilsdorf wanted a name short enough to fit a dial and sayable anywhere, so around 1908 he coined the nonsense word “Rolex,” claiming a genie whispered it on a London bus. He left the whole company to a charitable foundation, which owns it to this day.
