Rimowa copied its grooves from a 1919 airliner, then built the airliner again.
Richard Morszeck pressed the ridges into his aluminum cases in 1950, after the corrugated metal skin of the Junkers F 13, the first all-metal airliner. His son Dieter, a private pilot, paid for a seven-year project to rebuild one from a laser scan of a survivor at Le Bourget’s air museum. The replica, 2,600 parts, first flew on September 15, 2016.
