Reebok was named after an African antelope found in a dictionary.
In 1958, Joe and Jeff Foster — grandsons of the founder of J.W. Foster and Sons — broke off to start their own shoe company. Needing a new name by 1960, they found the grey rhebok in a dictionary. It was a small, fast southern African antelope. They went with the spelling that was free to register — Reebok.
