Real Madrid once had to strip the crown off its own crest.
King Alfonso XIII granted the club its crown and the title “Real,” Spanish for “Royal,” in 1920. When Spain declared a republic in 1931, the club dropped “Real,” pried the crown off its badge, and painted a purple stripe for Castile instead. That republican stripe still rides the crest today, beside the crown a later regime handed back.
