Procter & Gamble’s ad man created the Pentagon agency whose network led to the internet.
Neil McElroy joined the company’s advertising department in 1925, and in 1931 his three-page memo on selling Camay laid out brand management. He was running the company when, five days after Sputnik, he became Eisenhower’s Secretary of Defense. On 7 February 1958 he signed the order creating ARPA, whose ARPANET sent its first message in October 1969.
