Post cereal was invented by a patient checked into the Battle Creek Sanitarium.
That patient was C.W. Post, and the resort belonged to the Kellogg brothers. He watched their grain-based regimen, borrowed the ideas, and stayed in Battle Creek to compete against his former doctors. When he died in 1914, his 27-year-old daughter Marjorie Merriweather Post inherited the company and was long called the richest woman in America.
