Porsche means expensive and exclusive, but its founder designed a people’s car.
Ferdinand Porsche ran a firm that designed cars for others, and in the 1930s Hitler’s government hired him to build a cheap car for the masses, the Volkswagen Beetle. His firm designed tanks in the war, using forced labour. Only in 1948 did the family put its own name on a sports car, the 356, built largely from Beetle parts.
