Pixar sold $135,000 computers almost nobody bought before Toy Story.
It was Lucasfilm’s money-losing graphics division when Steve Jobs bought it in 1986 for $5 million, plus $5 million to keep the lights on. For years it limped along as a hardware company, selling fewer than 300 of those machines. Then came Toy Story. In 2006 Disney bought Pixar with its own shares, and Jobs became Disney’s largest shareholder.
