Philadelphia Cream Cheese was never made in Philadelphia.
It was created by William Lawrence, a dairyman in Chester, New York, by most accounts in 1872. His distributor put “Philadelphia” on the label because the city was famous for quality dairy, borrowing a reputation the cheese never earned.
