Pfizer’s first $2,500 was a loan from Charles Pfizer’s own father.
Charles Pfizer and Charles Erhart started in Brooklyn in 1849 on that loan, manufacturing a compound for treating intestinal worms. They blended it with almond toffee so patients would actually take it. In 2022, powered by its COVID-19 vaccine, that worm-medicine firm brought in roughly $100 billion, the first drug company in history to reach that mark.
