By the late 1920s Pepsodent’s sales were sliding toward bankruptcy. On August 19, 1929, it put a 15-minute radio serial, Amos ’n’ Andy, on NBC. By 1931 some 40 million people, a third of the country, were listening, Pepsodent’s sales ballooned, and advertisers that had shunned radio rushed to buy shows of their own.
