PayPal was not supposed to be a payment company.
In 1998 Max Levchin and Peter Thiel founded the company that became Confinity, to build encryption software for PalmPilots, letting people beam money between handhelds. Then came payments by email, and those took off. In 2002, eBay bought PayPal for $1.5 billion.
