Panda Express’s most famous dish was invented in Hawaii, not China.
In 1987, chef Andy Kao created orange chicken while opening the chain’s first Hawaii location, inspired by island citrus and local tastes. It became battered, deep-fried nuggets in a sticky sauce, a dish barely found in China. In 2025 the chain sold 148 million pounds of it.
