Oakley was founded by a man who made motorcycle handgrips.
Jim Jannard started Oakley in his garage in 1975, selling a handlebar grip from his car trunk to motocross riders. The same rubber, which he called “Unobtainium,” later went into the earstems and nose pads of his sunglasses, gripping harder the more a rider sweated.
