Nubank began with its founder’s five-month fight to open one bank account in Brazil.
In São Paulo in 2013, David Vélez set off the metal detector in a bank’s bulletproof doors and was asked to leave. Back inside, he waited 40 minutes for a manager. Two more visits and five months later, he had an account that cost $20 a month. Nubank, the purple-card bank he started that year, has a meeting room called Goodbye Revolving Door.
