After Apple pushed him out, Jobs built a black workstation that sold barely 50,000 units — a commercial dud. Yet Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first web browser on a NeXT cube at CERN, and id Software coded Doom on the same machines. In 1996 Apple bought the wreckage for about $427 million.
