New York Stock Exchange quoted every stock in fractions until 2001.
For more than 200 years shares traded in halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths, a legacy of Spanish traders and their pieces of eight. On the SEC’s order, nearly 3,400 stocks switched to decimals on January 29, 2001, and a share at $16 3/8 became $16.38. The smallest step a price could take fell from a sixteenth of a dollar to a penny.
