New Balance started as an arch support company.
William Riley founded the New Balance Arch Support Company in Boston in 1906, making orthopedic insoles for aching feet. Running shoes came decades later. In 1972, on Boston Marathon day, Jim Davis bought the firm — six employees making 30 pairs a day — for $100,000.
