Netflix started as a DVD-by-mail service while video rental stores ruled.
It launched in 1998 as a slower, stranger Blockbuster — seven-day DVD rentals by mail. In 2000, the founders offered to sell Netflix to Blockbuster for $50 million. Blockbuster passed and later went bankrupt. Netflix is now worth nearly $300 billion.
