Nescafé was invented after Nestlé had canceled the project.
In 1935, with no sign of success, Nestlé cut the funding for its chemist Max Morgenthaler’s attempt at a better instant coffee. He bought his own beans and carried on at home, and in April 1937 he served the board his samples. Nescafé went on sale in 1938, and a year’s stock sold out in two months.
