NBA was invented to solve a problem that wasn’t about basketball.
In 1946 the owners of big ice-hockey arenas met at New York’s Commodore Hotel with a problem — their buildings sat dark on the nights the hockey team played away. The basketball league they launched there existed to sell tickets on those empty dates. Even its first president, Maurice Podoloff, ran the American Hockey League.
