Napster was built in a dorm to solve a roommate’s complaint.
Shawn Fanning, a Northeastern freshman, was tired of his roommate griping that MP3s were hard to find. He built software that let anyone share music files with everyone else. By 2001 a reported 80 million people had signed up to share music on it, and that July Napster was shut down.
