Motorola’s founder bought back a piece of his own bankrupt company at auction for $750.
Paul Galvin’s battery business had failed twice, and what he saved at the auction was a device that let home radios run off a wall outlet. In 1930 he had a radio fitted to his Studebaker, drove 800 miles to a trade show and named the radio Motorola.
