Monopoly began as The Landlord’s Game, meant to teach Henry George’s ideas.
Lizzie Magie, a follower of the economist Henry George, patented The Landlord’s Game in 1904. Charles Darrow, an unemployed salesman, learned a homemade version from friends in 1932 and sold it to Parker Brothers as his own. Parker Brothers paid Magie $500 for her patent, and the game made Darrow the first millionaire game designer.
