McLaren is a surname invented to hide a love affair.
Ben Howie left a bride in New Zealand, eloped with a married mother of three and in 1900 sailed back with her under the name McLaren. He took it from his birthplace, McLaren Vale in South Australia. The secret surfaced when he turned 100 in 1972, two years after his grandson Bruce was killed testing one of the racing cars that carry the name.
