McDonald’s biggest moneymaker isn’t the burger.
In 1956 finance chief Harry Sonneborn set the company up to own the land beneath its restaurants and charge franchisees rent. “We are not technically in the food business,” he once said. “We are in the real estate business.” In 2024 McDonald’s collected $10 billion in rent from its own franchisees — more than it made in royalties.
