Marmite was invented as a byproduct of beer.
In 1902 a company formed in Burton-upon-Trent to do one thing — process the yeast sludge left at the bottom of Bass Brewery’s fermentation vats into a spread for toast. British troops were issued it in the First World War, and German prisoners of war in the Second. When COVID shut Britain’s pubs in 2020, the yeast supply dried up with them.
