Marlboro began as a women’s cigarette, with red tips to hide lipstick.
Sold as “Mild as May” from 1924, it had a quarter of one percent of American sales in 1954, when Philip Morris gave it a filter, a flip-top box and Leo Burnett’s cowboy. Sales went from 18 million cigarettes that year to over 6 billion the next.
