Marc Jacobs was fired for the grunge collection that made his name.
In November 1992, as head of women’s design at Perry Ellis, Jacobs turned a $2 flannel shirt from St. Mark’s Place into silk that cost $300 a yard. Critics hated it, buyers balked, and Perry Ellis fired him and never put the clothes into production. He sent samples to Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. “We burned it,” Love said.
