Manchester United began as a railway depot’s after-work football team.
Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot men formed Newton Heath LYR in 1878. By January 1902 the club sat £2,670 in debt under a winding-up order. Legend says the captain’s runaway St Bernard steered brewer John Henry Davies to the club. Davies staked money, turned the kit red and on 24 April 1902 handed it a new name — Manchester United.
