La Mer, one of skincare’s priciest creams, tells a very strange origin story.
By the brand’s telling, Max Huber was an aerospace physicist, supposedly with NASA, burned in a 1950s lab accident, who reportedly spent 12 years and 6,000 experiments perfecting a sea-kelp cream on his own skin. Independently, there’s no NASA record, no obituary, not one photograph of the burns the whole legend rests on.
