Kool-Aid was invented to cut shipping costs.
Edwin Perkins sold Fruit Smack, a liquid drink concentrate, in glass bottles that were costly to ship and prone to breaking. In 1927 he figured out how to dry the formula into a powder he could mail in a paper envelope. By 1950 the powder was bringing in more than $10 million a year, at a nickel a packet.
