Kering was built by a timber trader who got rich on sugar.
François Pinault opened a timber business in Rennes in 1962 and sold it to a British firm early in 1973. He put 300,000 francs of the cash into sugar, and when the price fell he bought 300,000 francs more. A year later he had made over 100 million francs.
