Jimmy Choo is named for a man who never designed its famous shoes.
A Vogue accessories editor, Tamara Mellon, built the brand around a quiet Hackney cobbler — her parents put up £150,000 for half the company and the right to his name. Choo stayed in bespoke and sold out by 2001. Mellon ran it for 15 years, and in 2017 Michael Kors bought Jimmy Choo for £896 million.
