Jack in the Box blew up its clown mascot on TV, then brought him back.
In 1980, chasing grown-up customers instead of families, the chain ran commercials in which its drive-thru clown head was blown up with dynamite. After an E. coli outbreak in 1993 nearly bankrupted it, the clown returned as Jack, the company’s founder and CEO, a giant round head on a business suit. In his first commercial he walked into headquarters and blew up the board of directors.
